The Federal Trade Commission will host a public workshop entitled “Big Data: A Tool for Inclusion or Exclusion?” in Washington on September 15, 2014, to further explore the use of “big data” and its impact on American consumers, including low income and underserved consumers. To mark its 43rd anniversary, Consumer Action’s Annual Awards Reception on October 21, 2014, will celebrate the theme of “Train the Trainer.” Through the power of individual and small group trainings, Consumer Action each year is able to personally interact with staff members of more than 550 community-based groups among the 7,000 the organization serves nationwide with free multilingual materials, training downloads and technical assistance.
Throughout the year, Consumer Action’s train-the-trainer meetings bring together community group representatives to be trained by Consumer Action staff on how to use the organization’s extensive educational modules to educate low- and moderate-income consumers. By training these key stakeholders, Consumer Action reaches tens of thousands of consumers with the information they need to improve their finances and their lives. In this way, Consumer Action “teaches one to reach thousands.”
Please join us on October 21 in Washington, DC to celebrate our long and innovative history of multilingual consumer education and to honor this year’s Consumer Excellence awardees: the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE), which provides financial education and practical information to people at all financial stages; Michelle Singletary, Washington Post “Color of Money” columnist, whose writings empower consumers to make wise money management choices; and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Consumer Education and Engagement Division, which creates opportunities for consumers to make better choices about money so that they can reach their life goals.
